Climate change is reaching every corner of the globe. Being part of the solution is no longer just a “feel good” environmental cause, but is imperative to our economy, our food supply, our communities and to ensuring a livable world for future generations. 

Climate change is one of the biggest environmental, economic, and humanitarian challenges we face this century. Our only hope is to attack it with every tool we have. Carbon offsets is one environmental tool.

Everyone needs a home, food, and a way to travel. Even after you’ve done your best to reduce through action, some of these activities will emit greenhouse gases. Carbon offsets let you help build projects in communities across the country that reduces emissions beyond what you could achieve through personal action. Offsets make environmental and economic sense: for emissions that are impossible to reduce, you can use funds to help reduce emissions elsewhere.

Harrison Street Real Estate continues to address employee travel emissions by evaluating and mitigating the equivalent CO2e by funding clean energy and GHG emission reduction projects through TerraPass.

In 2015, our offset purchase reduced emissions of 198.9 mT of CO2e, equivalent to CO2 emissions from the electricity use of almost 27 homes for one year or more than 42 passenger vehicles.

The Green Office Challenge is designed to help Chicago businesses and employees improve sustainability in the workplace and beyond. In 2013, we joined the challenge to improve our sustainability practices for the office place. Through the Green Office Challenge activities, we created a Green(er) purchasing policy to enhance the procurement practices at our office and establish sustainability as a core part of office culture.
